A 2007 study by Richard Wiseman from the University of Bristol found that 88% of individuals who set New Year’s resolutions fail to achieve their goals. Interestingly, only 52% of the study’s 3,000 participants believed they would succeed when they set their resolutions. Why the lack of confidence? And why do so few succeed?

Another study from the University of Pennsylvania’s Weight and Eating Disorders Program in 2012 explored the long-term success rates of restrictive diet and exercise programs. The findings were stark: 65% of dieters returned to their pre-diet weight within three years, and only 5% of individuals maintained weight loss from restrictive diets. That’s just one in 20 people.
